The #PhysEd Newsletter: How I Wrote My Own PE Outcomes.

Hey Reader!

I hope you're enjoying your summer! It's been a minute since I've reached out, but I'm starting to get ready for the upcoming school year and am PUMPED for what's to come.

This year, I'll be headed back to Kings County Academy (a.k.a. KCA the local P-8 public school where I live) for my third year. I'll still be teaching P-2 physical education and am taking on a new challenge this year: Core French!

I'm not going to get into my adventures in FSL here, but I DO want to talk about what I've been up to in PE. Specifically, I'd like to share how I wrote a set of bespoke PE outcomes for my school that focus on physical literacy, leisure literacy, and developing a sense of place.

Let's dive in!

πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€πŸ’» MY LATEST POST

A Curriculum of Their Own: How I Designed Bespoke PE Outcomes for My School

One of my goals for the PE program at KCA is to make it as relevant as possible to life in Kentville.

To achieve that goal, I knew that I was going to have to go beyond our provincial outcomes for physical education. That said, I decided to build a full set of PE outcomes that are a) uniquely tailored to where my students live, and b) built on everything I've learned regarding physical literacy, leisure literacy, place-based education, and social-emotional learning.

My outcomes are divided into five Learning Areas:

βœ… Movement Competence

πŸ“ Connection to Place

πŸ’‘ Lifelong Learning

❀️ Emotional Intelligence

β˜€οΈ Living Well

πŸŽ“ UPDATES FROM #PHYSEDU

Speaking of #PhysEdU, here are some of the posts that I've shared with the community recently:

Cannonball Clash [Game]

Set sail for high-seas chaos in Cannonball Clash! Crews race to keep their ships afloat by dodging, ducking, and firing cannonballs at rival ships. Teamwork, quick throws, and clever tactics are the keys to staying afloatβ€”sink or be sunk!

Winter Wild Day: A Field Day Out In The Cold. [Post]

Winter Wild Day – the winter version of my nature-based field day – brought the magic of outdoor adventure to the students at KCA, with sledding, snowshoe biathlon, animal tracking, and fire building activities.

The Reluctant Outdoor Educator: Why I Embraced Teaching P.E. Outside. [Essay]

I used to dread teaching outside, but moving to Nova Scotia completely changed my perspective. Surrounded by forests, trails, and a community that loves outdoor recreation, this essay is all about I’ve embraced outdoor education as the key to helping my students build authentic, lifelong leisure literacy.

Memberships cost as little as $10/year and every tier packs a punch in terms of value. I'm excited to be a part of something that helps PE teachers feel empowered in their teaching, helps them cultivate motivation, and encourages them to prioritize their health and well-being.

Hey Reader! I don't know how things have been where you are, but we are having ourselves a winter here in Nova Scotia. Snowstorms, freezing temps, icy streets and roadways... this winter has been everything that growing up in Canada promised it would be. Listen, I'm not going to pretend that I love the additions of scraping ice off my windshield, shoving my kids into their snowsuits, and shovelling the driveway daily. However, I appreciate that this kind of weather brings opportunities that...

Hey Reader! How's it going? I hope you're doing great! I'm currently at the beach with my family for Labour Day weekend. We're soaking in one last day of sand, sun, play, and fun before we head back to Kentville. On Thursday, the 2024-2025 school year kicks off, and I am pumped to be back at KCA. It is a special feeling to be able to return to a school you've already taught at. Last year was my first "first year" at a new school in almost a decade, and I forgot how heavy of a lift starting...

Hey Reader! Happy August! I hope life is treating you well in your part of the world! This week, I want to share something that is drastically changing the way I think about my P.E. program. Let's do this! βš›οΈ THIS WEEK'S ESSAY How We Choose To Spend Our Free Time: A Framework For Understanding Leisure Behaviour As physical educators, we aim to empower our students to live healthy, active lives by filling their days with adventure and play. Leisure timeβ€”the time when we are free of...
