The #PhysEd Newsletter: How I Wrote My Own PE Outcomes.

Hey Reader!
I hope you're enjoying your summer! It's been a minute since I've reached out, but I'm starting to get ready for the upcoming school year and am PUMPED for what's to come.
This year, I'll be headed back to Kings County Academy (a.k.a. KCA the local P-8 public school where I live) for my third year. I'll still be teaching P-2 physical education and am taking on a new challenge this year: Core French!
I'm not going to get into my adventures in FSL here, but I DO want to talk about what I've been up to in PE. Specifically, I'd like to share how I wrote a set of bespoke PE outcomes for my school that focus on physical literacy, leisure literacy, and developing a sense of place.
Let's dive in!

A Curriculum of Their Own: How I Designed Bespoke PE Outcomes for My School
One of my goals for the PE program at KCA is to make it as relevant as possible to life in Kentville.
To achieve that goal, I knew that I was going to have to go beyond our provincial outcomes for physical education. That said, I decided to build a full set of PE outcomes that are a) uniquely tailored to where my students live, and b) built on everything I've learned regarding physical literacy, leisure literacy, place-based education, and social-emotional learning.
My outcomes are divided into five Learning Areas:
β Movement Competence
π Connection to Place
π‘ Lifelong Learning
β€οΈ Emotional Intelligence
βοΈ Living Well

#PhysEdU β my online community for physical educators who love what they do β has continued to grow and evolve since I launched it a few years back.
Now that I've returned to teaching full-time, I'm looking forward to continuing to share, learn, and grow alongside the amazing PE teachers who have made our community such an amazing place.
That's why I've made some big changes to the platform's membership tiers to make #PhysEdU even more accessible to anyone who is hoping to find the support, ideas, and fellowship they've been craving in their teaching.
The new #PhysEdU tiers are:
#οΈβ£ Community Tier: $10/year
Access all of the essential #PhysEdU spaces and unlock more by levelling up with gamification!
β¨ #PhysEdU Plus: $49/year
Access all of the essential #PhysEdU spaces PLUS the Library Spaces (featuring exclusive posts), Games Database (with downloadable PDFs), and Assessment Area (which includes my PE outcomes and Learning Roadmaps)!
β‘οΈ #PhysEdU Pro: $99/year

I can't wait to see how #PhysEdU continues to grow this year and hope that you will decide to join us on campus!
Speaking of #PhysEdU, here are some of the posts that I've shared with the community recently:
Cannonball Clash [Game]
Set sail for high-seas chaos in Cannonball Clash! Crews race to keep their ships afloat by dodging, ducking, and firing cannonballs at rival ships. Teamwork, quick throws, and clever tactics are the keys to staying afloatβsink or be sunk!
Winter Wild Day: A Field Day Out In The Cold. [Post]
Winter Wild Day β the winter version of my nature-based field day β brought the magic of outdoor adventure to the students at KCA, with sledding, snowshoe biathlon, animal tracking, and fire building activities.
The Reluctant Outdoor Educator: Why I Embraced Teaching P.E. Outside. [Essay]
I used to dread teaching outside, but moving to Nova Scotia completely changed my perspective. Surrounded by forests, trails, and a community that loves outdoor recreation, this essay is all about Iβve embraced outdoor education as the key to helping my students build authentic, lifelong leisure literacy.
Memberships cost as little as $10/year and every tier packs a punch in terms of value. I'm excited to be a part of something that helps PE teachers feel empowered in their teaching, helps them cultivate motivation, and encourages them to prioritize their health and well-being.

Hey Reader! I hope you had a great week and are either a) feeling ready for this snowpocalypse or b) completely unaffected by it! I've got so much going on in my teaching that I'm excited about: My primary/grade one students are working on their control skills (i.e. manipulative skills) and making good progress with their throwing and catching! My grade two students are CRUSHING IT in their skateboarding unit! My grade four students are getting more and more familiar with animal tracking...
Hey Reader! I hope you had a great weekend and are feeling energized for another week in the gym. This week, I've been reflecting on something that comes up constantly in my K-2 classes: how kids handle winning and losing. No matter how well a game is going, it only takes one meltdown over the final score to derail the entire lesson. The truth is, we're not just teaching games: we're teaching kids how to define success for themselves. And until we help them reframe what winning actually...
Hey Reader! Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend and are feeling excited about another week of teaching, testing, and (hopefully) laughing. This week, I did something that I haven't done in a minute: I published an episode of The #PhysEd Show podcast! My goal is to get back into publishing monthly episodes of my podcast this year. To kick things off, I decided to share some of the classroom management systems that I've created, implemented, and iterated in my teaching. Let's dive in....
