The #PhysEd Newsletter: Using AI in PE!

Hey Reader!

I hope you had a great week! This week, I want to dive into the world of AI and share a little on how I'm currently using it as a PE teacher.

Let's do this!

⚛️ THIS WEEK'S ESSAY

Google Maps for the Mind: How AI is Empowering My Professional Curiosity.

The night was dark, I was late, and I had no idea how to get there.

I was driving to a friend's cottage for a party they had planned for the weekend. They had given me the address, but it was in a town I had never heard of that was in a region I had never been to. They even warned me that there would be country roads and limited signage, but I hadn't been able to get off work any early than usual.

I was going to have to drive there in the dark of the night. Regardless, I had all of the confidence in the world. Want to know why?

Because I had a Mapquest account.

Before Google Maps and smartphones, Mapquest is what empowered me to explore my world. Being able to log into my account online, punch in two addresses, and instantly get directions gave me the confidence I needed to boldly explore new worlds (well, roads). All I needed was to make sure that there was ink in the printer.

When I got my first iPhone and could access Google Maps via the platform's app, everything changed once again.

Now, I didn't even need an exact location. I could just type in something I was looking for (or tap something curious on the map), and instantly-generated directions for driving, walking, or public transport would guide me there.

To this day, Maps remains one of the most used apps on my phone. Why? Because it removes the friction between figuring out how to go from where I am to where I want to be. It frees up headspace, saves energy, and makes exploring fun.

In many ways, AI has become a Google Maps for my mind.

In the past few months, I have leveraged it (through a variety of apps and platforms) to pull images out of my mind and onto a screen. I've used it to check work and rewrite sections that felt off. It's been by my side as I've developed new resources and lesson plans to meet the needs of my students. It has helped me move so many ideas from my "one day, when I have time" list to my "today" list.

AI is accelerating my growth as a physical educator by removing the friction between what I want to do/learn/achieve and how to actually do it. It allows me to stay focused and passionate about the why of my teaching by eliminating so many barriers that normally get in the way.

AI is here, and the incredible, mind-boggling version of it that we're experiencing today is the worst it will ever be. Think about that.

Are you ready to start exploring where it can take physical education?

🎙️ THE #PHYSED SHOW

Despite how exciting the AI revolution we are living is, there's no doubt that it can also be wildly overwhelming.

I've put together a two-part series on how I'm using AI in my work as a physical education teacher. In this first part, I'll unpack some of the key terms that will help you make sense of everything that is happening in AI. I'll also walk you through how I'm using AI as a co-pilot in my teaching, which allows me to stay in the driver's seat and continue to have fun as a teacher.

📅 UPCOMING EVENT

I am honoured and over-the-moon to be going back to the National PE Institute as a keynote speaker this summer!

The PE Institute will forever hold a special place in my heart. It's where I got to make friendships that have endured to this day. It's where I got my big break into the US physical education scene (thanks to none other than Mr. Artie Kamiya). It's where I surrounded myself with champions of our profession who inspired me to reimagine what's possible in physical education.

And now it's back. This July 24-26 in Asheville, North Carolina, some of the best and brightest in our profession will be gathering on the campus of UNC Asheville for one of the premier events in physical education.

To learn more, check out the Facebook Group that Artie has set up! He'll be sharing updates there until the event's website is up and running.

🎓 UPDATES FROM #PHYSEDU

#PhysEdU – my professional growth community for PE teachers that I run through ThePhysicalEducator.com – is continuing to grow.

Here is some of the content I posted there this week:

FAFO: Apple Clips (Workshop Recording)

I hosted a live workshop in which we explored how to use Apple Clips to create advocacy videos for your PE program.

G6 Pickleball Learning Roadmap

I shared a completed Learning Roadmap (the student-friendly, qualitative rubrics I make and use as the foundation of my units) that focused on skills, knowledge, and understandings students can explore through Pickleball.

Lesson Walkthrough: Grade One Fitness

I published a lesson walkthrough video to share how my students learned about healthy and unhealthy foods through a new version of Jake the Hungry Snake. The lesson is part of our fitness unit in which we've been exploring healthy habits.

Crossy Road

I put together a game overview (along with a downloadable PDF game sheet) that showcases how to play Crossy Road: a fun invasion game for upper elementary students that is designed to help students explore skills that create space on offence.

Lesson Walkthrough: Kindergarten Dance

I published a lesson walkthrough video to share how I've kicked off my dance unit with my grade one students. We're focused on exploring the idea of musicality by playing with beats and rhythms as we move in PE.

Valentine's Day Games

With Valentine's Day celebrations taking place at our school, I put together two great games for my students: Bouquet Bounty and I Love You Tag. I shared video walkthroughs to show how the games are played and how I introduced them to my students.

Memberships cost as little as $5/month and every tier packs a punch in terms of value. I'm excited to be a part of something that helps PE teachers feel empowered in their teaching, helps them cultivate motivation, and encourages them to prioritize their health and well-being.

Hey Reader! I hope you're enjoying your summer! It's been a minute since I've reached out, but I'm starting to get ready for the upcoming school year and am PUMPED for what's to come. This year, I'll be headed back to Kings County Academy (a.k.a. KCA the local P-8 public school where I live) for my third year. I'll still be teaching P-2 physical education and am taking on a new challenge this year: Core French! I'm not going to get into my adventures in FSL here, but I DO want to talk about...

Hey Reader! I don't know how things have been where you are, but we are having ourselves a winter here in Nova Scotia. Snowstorms, freezing temps, icy streets and roadways... this winter has been everything that growing up in Canada promised it would be. Listen, I'm not going to pretend that I love the additions of scraping ice off my windshield, shoving my kids into their snowsuits, and shovelling the driveway daily. However, I appreciate that this kind of weather brings opportunities that...

Hey Reader! How's it going? I hope you're doing great! I'm currently at the beach with my family for Labour Day weekend. We're soaking in one last day of sand, sun, play, and fun before we head back to Kentville. On Thursday, the 2024-2025 school year kicks off, and I am pumped to be back at KCA. It is a special feeling to be able to return to a school you've already taught at. Last year was my first "first year" at a new school in almost a decade, and I forgot how heavy of a lift starting...
