The #PhysEd Newsletter: Getting Ready For The School Year

Hey Reader!

How's it going? I hope you are doing great!

Things are busy around here. I'm enjoying my time as Kentville's Active Transportation Facilitator and getting things ready for a big summer bike rodeo at the end of the month.

I'm also getting very excited for the start of the school year! Now, I know that summer is something we teachers love to savor, but it's been three years since I've been in the gym and I'm dying to get things started!

Today, I want to talk about the mental work in getting ready for the upcoming school year.

Let's dive in!

⚛️ THIS WEEK'S ESSAY

Why I'm Considering This School Year The Opportunity Of A Lifetime.

This year, I'm going back to teaching!

I know I've mentioned this a million times already, but I honestly can't wait to be back in the gym.

This new chapter in my teaching journey will be wildly different than any other I've experienced throughout my career. I'm in such a unique position with no lack of opportunities or possibilities in sight.

Here's what I mean:

🏡 Teaching where I live.

I'm now a part of the faculty at Kings County Academy (KCA), a public K-8 school in Kentville, Nova Scotia.

Fun fact: I live in Kentville!

Although I technically lived in the same city as my previous school, Montreal (pop. 1.78M) is such a huge city that I never felt the same kind of connection to it as I do with K-Town (pop. 6,600).

I'm getting to know my little town inside and out, and I can't wait to bring that hometown feel to the elementary physical education program I hope to build at KCA.

🚲 A foot in both worlds.

My position at KCA is part-time (50%). This is what I was hoping to land as I still have meaningful work I want to do through both ThePhysicalEducator.com and #PhysEdU.

That said, I also have another gig in my life: I've recently taken on a role within Kentville's Parks and Recreation Department as the town's Active Transportation Facilitator.

Over the past two years, I've been involved with the Parks & Rec team in a variety of ways. Through those experiences, I've come to see Parks and Recreation as a parallel universe to the one I know as a physical educator.

In a nutshell, my role as a PE teacher is to empower my students to live a life that is full of adventure. On the flip side of that coin, Parks and Recreation helps create the contexts in which those adventures take place.

As I go into this school year with a foot in both worlds, I'm excited to see what kinds of bridges I can build between these two parallel universes to create opportunities for lasting, meaningful experiences for my students.

❤️ Bringing PE home.

Lastly, I'm about to become really familiar with my son's PE teacher.

That's because I am him.

My eldest is about to begin Primary (a.k.a. kindergarten) at KCA, which means that physical education will become a part of his weekly school schedule.

In the past, I've always tried to remember that every kid that walks into my gym is someone's child. This year, that's about to get a lot easier for me to do.

And it's not just my son: most of our new friends here in Kentville are people that we've connected with through our kids, which means I'll be teaching a lot of their kids as well.

I'm feeling a healthy amount of responsibility (a.k.a kinda nervous) about being in this position, but I'm also grateful for it. I've dedicated my entire professional life to developing a sound pedagogical skillset, and I'm glad that I'll have an opportunity to use it with kids that matter the most to me (i.e. my own kids, my friend's kids, and kids in my community).

This school year feels like an opportunity of a lifetime, and I'm pumped to get it started. I'll keep you posted on how things go, what I learn, and how I'm feeling along the way!

🎙️ LATEST PODCAST

Although there is a lot that I'm looking forward to this school year, there are also many things that I'm nervous about.

Starting at a new school after a three-year hiatus from teaching is intimidating, no matter how much experience you may have.

In this week's episode of The #PhysEd Show Podcast, I decided to focus on the things that have me feeling apprehensive about going back to school based on my previous experiences in teaching. I also cover how I've grown since then and how I'm choosing to be proactive to avoid falling into the pitfalls I fell into last time.

✨ GREAT RESOURCES

Setting up a new gym is pretty exciting, especially for someone as obsessed with visuals as I am.

I'm looking forward to sharing the FMS Skill Posters with the students at KCA and using these visuals to help students make sense of the different cues related to each skill.

With clear visuals, student-friendly cues, and QR codes that link to video breakdowns of each skill being performed, the FMS Skill Posters have always been a staple in my teaching!

🔥 CLICK-WORTHY CONTENT

After listening to Dr. Mariana Brussoni's podcast interview on "Disconnect: The Outdoor Education Podcast", I've been having fun exploring OutsidePlay.ca.

One of my big goals for this school year is to work with the parents of KCA's school community and help them understand how they can be supporting different forms of play – including risky play – at home.

This resource is definitely going to help me achieve this goal and get more kids exploring the joys of risky play!

Hey Reader! I hope you're enjoying your summer! It's been a minute since I've reached out, but I'm starting to get ready for the upcoming school year and am PUMPED for what's to come. This year, I'll be headed back to Kings County Academy (a.k.a. KCA the local P-8 public school where I live) for my third year. I'll still be teaching P-2 physical education and am taking on a new challenge this year: Core French! I'm not going to get into my adventures in FSL here, but I DO want to talk about...

Hey Reader! I don't know how things have been where you are, but we are having ourselves a winter here in Nova Scotia. Snowstorms, freezing temps, icy streets and roadways... this winter has been everything that growing up in Canada promised it would be. Listen, I'm not going to pretend that I love the additions of scraping ice off my windshield, shoving my kids into their snowsuits, and shovelling the driveway daily. However, I appreciate that this kind of weather brings opportunities that...

Hey Reader! How's it going? I hope you're doing great! I'm currently at the beach with my family for Labour Day weekend. We're soaking in one last day of sand, sun, play, and fun before we head back to Kentville. On Thursday, the 2024-2025 school year kicks off, and I am pumped to be back at KCA. It is a special feeling to be able to return to a school you've already taught at. Last year was my first "first year" at a new school in almost a decade, and I forgot how heavy of a lift starting...
